The Story of Sapphire Dalmatians

WHO?

Ponderosa Sapphire Sky Dalmatians, now also known as Sapphire Dalmatians, is owned by Linda Daly, who first named the kennel in 2014, as I moved from being a Pet home to a Show and Performance home. There is a gem in the Rockies called the Ponderosa Sapphire, which inspired me to rename the kennel to Sapphire Dalmatians, when looking at becoming a breeding kennel. I was also looking for a shorter name to bless puppies with, as Dog Names are limited in size by AKC. Sapphire Dalmatians is home to visiting kids, grandkids, a cat, two horses, two veteran Russell Terriers and two Dals.

WHY DALMATIANS?

Linda Daly grew up on a farm in Kansas with Dalmatians her parents owned and bred in conjunction with a formal Dalmatian kennel in the Kansas City area whose name somehow I never knew. The Dals were named Debbie and April and were black and white females. Linda's paternal grandparents owned a male and female liver Dalmatian pair, Beau and Sadie. Linda Daly always loved Dals and could not wait to have them in her life again as an adult. My Dalmatians past and present have always been beloved family members.

FOUNDATION DAM:

In 2021, Linda Daly purchased Sapphire Dalmatian's Foundation Dam Mandoline, GCHG MBISS Dakota Snowood Secret Wish BN CGC DCAT. In 2022 she was #2 in Fast Cats. She can be found on the DCA MBISS list. She has twice been in the DCA Top 20, has a 2024 AOM from DCA and was awarded a BOS from AKC at the Royal Canine Championship in 2024. Kristine Benoit at Dakota Dalmatians is her co-owner and breeder. Meg Hennessey of Snowood Dalmatians and Deborah Smith were also her breeders.
Mandoline is a daughter Nate, GCHP MBIS MBISS Dakota Into the Woods ROMX. His many DCA Tittles include DCA Top 20, 2x DCA BOB, DCA Best in Sweepstakes and Top Stud. He can be found on the All Time DCA BIS list, DCA All Time Top Dal list and DCA All Time MBISS list. Mandoline's Dam is CH Dakota Snowood When You Wish Upon a Star ROMX. Daisy is a full sibling to Nate, whose AKC name is CH Dakota Snowood's Starry Stary Night ROMX and a DCA Top Stud tied with Nate one year and another year number one Stud on his own.

Mandoline's Ancestry like all of our past Dals leads back to to CH Fireman Freckled Friend and kennels of Coachman, Tatoo and Tally Ho, as well as other well known Dals. Also like all of our Dals since 1990, she descends from CH MBISS Aberdeen Sawyer Brown who was owned by John and Kris Benoit at the Dakota kennel and bred by Denise Powell at the Aberdeen Kennel. Mandoline is related to her name sake, CH Aberdeen Lady Mandoline and that was the Dam of our second and third Dals.

Also all our Show Dals starting in 2014 were or are related to the parents of Ian, GCHP MBIS MBISS Spotlight Ruffian ROMX named CH MBISS Spotlight Scandalous ROMX and All Time Top Dal, CH Spotlight Splendid ROMX. Like Nate, Ian won many notable titles and can be found on the All Time DCA BIS list, DCA All Time Top Dal list and DCA All Time MBISS list.
Furthermore Mandoline is a Grand Daughter of Dirt, whose AKC name was MBISS GCHS Enchanted Hart Down n Dirty ROMX, who in turn had the Grand Sire of Sawyer. Mandoline also descends from Sawyer through her Sire Nate's Grand Dam, as well as her Dam Daisys' Grand Dam and Sawyer is most recently in her ancestry the Grand Sire of Mandoline's Dam. She is also a Great Grand Daughter of Gryffin, a littermate of Ian, GCHP MBIS MBISS Spotlight Ruffian.

Mandoline is a black and white female with amber eyes. Her dam and sire's sire were liver along with many other ancestors. She is 22 inches at the withers and 52 pounds. She has a CHIC number with bilateral hearing, normal eyes, normal thyroid and good hips and elbows.

STUD:

Sapphire Dalmatians obtained a male puppy in 2022 named Sundance, GCH BPISS SWBSS AOMSS CarriageHills Sundance Kid. He was bred by Amber Spradlin at CarriageHIlls Dalmatians in Maryland and is a son of famous Dals named Gram and Fury, Gram was # 1 Dalmatian All Systems in 2024. Fury was #5 All Systems in 2018 and 2019. Sundance's parents are GCHP MBIS MBISS Spotlight No Filter needed at Amethyst and GCHG MBISS CarriageHills Make Way for the Furious. He is half-way to a bronze and at his most recent shows the Pueblo Dog Show in November 2025 and the Denver Dog Show in February 2026 won multiple BOS awards at both shows.
Sundance is a Great-Grandson of Dirt, Mandoline's Grandsire, GCHS MBISS Enchanted Hart Down and Dirty, who is a Grandson of Sawyer. Sundance also has a Common Ancestor with Mandoline through Gryffin, GCH Spotlight N Dakota Gryffin, a littermate of Ian. Sundance's Sire Gram is a Grandson of Ian and a Dirt, who is in turn a Grandson of Sawyer. Sundance's dam Dam Fury was sired by Siren N Dakota's Heir to the Throne, sired in turn by Dane, CH Dakota Paradise Alley, a son of Gryffin and littermate of Ian.
Sundance has a CHIC number and although his original Thyroid test was equivocal, his most recent one was normal. He has good hips and elbows, normal eyes and bi-lateral hearing. He is a black and white male with dark brown eyes and is 70 pounds at 23.5 inches. His parents are both black and white and his Sire is Liver Factored.

PAST FIRST DAL WITH COMMON DISTANT ANCESTRY:

In 1986, Linda Daly purchased a pet quality female descended from CH Fireman's Freckled Friend ROMX named Nicky, aka Nicole of Arapahoe. CH Fireman's Freckled Friend ROMX was a famous distant ancestor of all our Sapphire Dals. HIs Grand Sire was the well-known CH Coachman Chuck-A-Luck ROMX, whose known ancestry in Sapphire Dalmatian's Foundation Dam extends to the American Tatoo and Tally-Ho lines in the early 20th century and late nineteenth century in England.
SECOND DAL WITH COMMON ANCESTRY AND COMMON DISTANT ANCESTRY:

In 1990 Linda Daly purchased a male pet quality Dal from Aberdeen Dalmatians, known as Aberdeen's Apache Tears and on AKC paperwork as Jones Puppy #5. If not for his patch, he would have been a champion, as he had lovely conformation and spots. Five of his littermates went on to become champions. Many people told Linda Daly that he was the best-looking Dalmatian that they had ever seen.

Apache's Sire was Sawyer, whose AKC name was CH Aberdeen Sawyer Brown (L) ROMX, also bred by Denise Powell. Sawyer was owned by John and Kristine Benoit in Illinois. With Apache a tradition of all the Daly Dals at what was to be known as Sapphire Dalmatians having Sawyer heritage. Eventually what is now Sapphire Dalmatians was connected back to Dakota Dalmatians and the familiar name of Kristine Benoit in getting our Foundation Dam. Additionally, Apache's Dam was Sapphire Dalmatian's Foundation Dam's namesake, CH Aberdeen Lady Mandoline. Her littermate named Piper, whose AKC name was CH Aberdeen's Magic Flute was a fifth generation ancestor of our current Foundation Dam, whose call name is Mandoline.

3RD DAL, HALF-SIBLING OF OUR 2ND DAL:

In 2002 Franchesca, whose AKC name was Aberdeen's Franchesca Blues joined Apache, as another pet quality Dal. She had the same Dam as Apache, CH Aberdeen Lady Mandoline and her Sire was CH Firebuster's Comic Relief, ROM. Cash and Lily's Dam had Sawyer heritage. Sawyer's Sire, CH Madurhason Yazoo ROM was a Grandson of another famous Dal, Am CH/Can/Mexican CH Madurhason Tanfastic (L).

4TH AND 5TH DALMATIANS SPOTLIGHT/SAWYER COMMON ANCESTRY:
In 2014, Linda Daly acquired two new Dalmatians, male and female littermates, who were Show Dalmatians from Monumental Dalmatians. The male Monumental Dal, named Cash, passed in 2022. His AKC name was GCH CH Monumental Always a Rockstar at Ponderosa Sky. His littermate, named Lily, passed in January 2026. She earned a DCA Versatility award and her AKC name was CH Monumental Always Up to Something RN BN RI CGCA CAX and FCAT. They had distant ancestry with Sawyer and were Great Grand Pups of Ian, GCHP MBIS MBISS Spotlight Ruffian. With the mentoring of Tana Rugg, I moved my new Dals into the Show ring and Companion Performance classes, as well as Fast Cat and longer distance runs.

DAKOTA/SPOTLIGHT CONNECTIONS REINFORCED BY MONUMENTAL:
Cash and LIly's beautiful littermate, Savvy, GCHS MonumentaI's It's Always Better With Chocolate (L), a Great Grand Daughter of Ian, GCHP MBIS MBISS Spotlight Ruffian ROMX in a single litter produced with Nate, GCHP MBIS MBISS Dakota Into the Woods, two Top 20 males, professionally handled Cooper, whose AKC name is GCHS Monumental's Oh Danny Boy (L) owned by Leah Levins and Tana Rugg and owner-handled Finn, whose AKC name is GCHS Monumental's Kissin' The Blarney Stone owned by Jann Rhodes and Leslie Smith, as well as Tana's keeper, Roisin, GCHS Monumental' Shenanigan (L). Roisin is a DCA Versatility award winner and AOM winner, with many performance titles. Cooper in conjunction with CH Artisan n Cimarron Talk of the Town bred by Barbara Morris and Carol Capri produced MBISS GCHG Artisan N Wildwood Aisling Runnin' Down a Dream, who was a Top 3 Dalmatian All Systems in 2023, owned by Leah Levin and Barbara Morris.
This wonderful result and my own experience owning dogs with the heritage of Sawyer and Spotlight, along with Meg Henessey's ties to both Snowood and Dakota, and many other kennels who have embraced these lines, further inspired me back to look at a Dakota Dal for our next Dal and keep Spotlight connections also well in mind. Tana Rugg and Kris Benoit both reinforced this for me not only in the choice of our Foundation Dam but Kris Benoit's choice her puppy Dante, owned in conjunction with Barbara and James Lyons, who was sired by Spotlight Ruffian and produced by Kris's female Kat, a granddaughter of Sawyer. Thus this Common Ancestry became the Type sought at Sapphire Dalmatians with both of our Dals, Mandoline and Sundance.

Puppy Plans:

None at this time but keep in touch. We are not yet a Breeder of Merit but our Dals since 1990 have all been bred by AKC Breeders of Merit and have had CHIC numbers through OFA. Our Dals have had success both in Performance and Conformation. We value good temperaments and most of all family loved Dals as our purpose in becoming Breeders and look forward to raising healthy, happy puppies with proper
stimulation and nutrition. I am on the Board of the Greater Denver Dalmatian Club and also greatly appreciate membership with the Dalmatian Club of America.
